‘도시해킹’이란 도시탐험과 공간해킹의 합성어로, 정치·기업 권력이 설정한 도시의 금지구역이나 폐건물을 공간해킹하는 것을 의미한다. 평소에는 범접하기 어려운 고층 꼭대기부터 깊숙한 지하터널까지 도시의 다양한 층위를 파악할 수 있는 도시해킹은 시민의 진정한 공간적 자유를 되찾으려는 21세기에 새로이 급부상한 문화로, 지금도 세계 곳곳의 젊은이들이 이 새롭고 위험스런 행위에 매료당하고 있다.
『도시해킹』은 영국에서 악명 높은 공간해커 조직인 LCC의 탐험대원이자 연구자로서 도시해킹을 직접 몸으로 체험하며 최초로 학문적 접근을 시도한 브래들리 개럿의 저서로, 지난 4년 동안 일어난 일련의 사건들이 충실히 기록되어 있다. 세계 최고의 보안을 자랑하는 도시에서 그들의 눈을 사로잡았던 비밀 장소에 침입한 일이나 폐건물의 촬영 기법에 이르기까지, 도시탐험의 모든 측면을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.
