경제불평등을 가속화하는 주류경제학에 맞서온
좌파경제학자들의 이야기

정치경제학자이자 저널리스트인 C.J. 폴리크로니우가 애머스트대학 ‘정치경제연구소(PERI)’의 로버트 폴린 교수와 함께 평생을 주류경제학에 맞서온 좌파경제학자 24명의 인터뷰를 담았다. 이들은 미국, 영국을 비롯해 아시아, 유럽, 남미, 아프리카 등 전 세계에서 경제적 불평등과 부의 양극화, 빈곤 문제를 개선하고, 복지정책과 재정정책, 금융정책을 혁신하기 위한 학문적 연구를 지속해왔을 뿐만 아니라 때로는 경제관료가 되어 실제로 경제정책을 수립하고 실행하며 더 나은 세상을 만들기 위해 수십 년 동안 노력해왔다.

이들이 맞서 싸우는 상대는 1970년대 말에 시작돼 여전히 세계 전역에 만연해 있는 신자유주의적 자본주의 주류경제학이다. 신자유주의는 경제적 불평등을 심화시키는 경제정책 개발에 앞서온 자본주의의 변종이다. 불평등한 주류경제학에 맞서 반주류의 진보경제학을 펼쳐온 24명의 경제학자들이 어떻게 진보적 경제철학을 갖고 그 길을 걸어오게 되었는지 그들의 개인적 체험, 중요한 역사적 사건과 잘못된 경제정책에 대한 반성, 분석적 접근법들과의 논쟁과 연구 성과들이 풍성하게 담겨 있다.
