한 권으로 읽는 현대 한국미술사

구한말과 일제강점기의 조선 그리고 해방 이후 대한민국에서 ‘미술’은 어떤 과정을 거쳐 현재에 이르렀을까? 조선에도 미술 활동과 미술가가 있었지만 ‘미술’이라는 말은 없었다. 1881년, 일본 조사시찰단의 일원이었던 이헌영이 일본의 미술단체 ‘관고미술회’를 언급한 것이 ‘미술’이라는 말의 시초다.

이후 미술은 부국을 꿈꾸는 조선의 산업전략으로, 서구의 근대적 시선을 내면화하는 시각장치로, 식민지배를 강고하게 만드는 문화통치의 일환으로, 억압에서 해방된 사회를 꿈꾸는 이들의 투쟁수단 등으로 다양한 면모를 보였다. 혹은 이런 것들과 대결하며 예술로서의 자의식을 찾아가는 과정이기도 했다. 이 과정에서 ‘참여’와 ‘순수’, 서양화와 동양화, 추상과 구상 등이 각각 이 땅에서 어떤 미술이 가능한지를 두고 서로 겨루었다.

<비평으로 보는 현대 한국미술>은 그 진지한 격돌을 당대 미술비평의 말들을 통해 바라본다. 그러기 위해 19세기 말 서구의 ‘모던 아트’가 들어온 이래 1990년대까지 약 100년간의 미술 비평문 중 138편을 선정했다. 특히 원문 그대로 소개되는 일이 드물었던 1950년대 이전의 비평문들 중 전설적인 비평문들을 직접 만날 수 있도록 했다. 이제 현대 한국미술 100년을 한 권의 책으로 만난다.
