자부심 가득한 여섯 음절 ‘흥미진진 공주’

소도시 여행의 끝판왕, 공주를 만난다

공주시가 내건 시 슬로건이자 캐치프레이즈는 ‘흥미진진 공주’다. 그런 말을 내걸 만큼 재미있는 도시라는 자부심이 짧은 여섯 음절에 가득하다. 그 ‘흥미진진 공주’만 따로 다룬 여행책이 세상에 나왔다. 그동안 공주는 같은 백제 고도이자 금강변의 도시인 부여와 세트로 묶이거나, 그도 아니면 여러 소도시 중의 하나로 함께 소개되는 식이었다. 공주처럼 여행 콘텐츠가 풍부한 도시로서는 서운할 일이었다.

공주는 여행할 맛이 나는 도시다. 볼거리·먹을거리·할 거리가 풍성하게 많고, 재미가 가득한 곳이다. 공주는 우리나라에서 처음 구석기 유물이 발견된 곳이다. 한성백제가 멸망 직전까지 몰린 상황에서 수도를 옮겨 중흥의 기틀을 닦았던, 웅진백제시대의 중심이었다. 홍성, 충주, 청주와 함께 충청권을 대표하는 도시였고, 임진왜란 이후에는 충청권 전체를 아우르는 감영이 있던 도시였다. 근대 이후엔 교육도시와 역사도시로 내실을 기했다. 1971년 무령왕릉이 발굴되면서는 화려한 백제문화를 품은 보물들이 세상을 깜짝 놀라게 했다. 한쪽으로는 계룡산, 한쪽으로는 금강을 옆에 둔 자연환경도 멋지고 아름답다. 공주엔 유네스코가 지정한 세계유산이 세 곳(공산성, 무령왕릉과 왕릉원, 마곡사)이나 있다. 이래저래 흥미진진하다! 그 흥미진진한 공주의 구석구석을 책으로 먼저 만난다.
